In the thirteenth century, Amsterdam grew at the mouth of the Amstel river. It took its name from the dam that was built to protect the surrounding area from the former Zuiderzee. Initially Amsterdam was a small fishing village, but after it was granted toll-free access to all Dutch rivers, it rapidly grew into a trading centre. Between 1300 and 1306 it was granted a charter and its seaborne trade with Hamburg and the Baltic dates from that time. This trade gradually extended to other parts of Europe and in the fifteenth century Amsterdam became the largest mercantile city in the province of Holland.
Although Amsterdam had developed a powerful maritime force, it was overshadowed by Antwerp. But in 1589 that city was captured by Spanish troops and many of its inhabitants -some of the most prosperous among them- moved north to Amsterdam. This led to rapid growth as they brought with them the skills, the gold and the diamond industry that would make Amsterdam one of the largest trading cities in the world.
Numerous commercial and transhipment companies sprang up and Amsterdam became the distribution centre for the whole of Europe. The prosperity was largely due to the VOC (the Dutch East India Company) which coordinated shipping and trade with Southeast Asia.
The Netherlands remained neutral during WWI. The depression in the 1930s hit the city hard and unemployment was extremely high at that time. Although the Netherlands tried to stay neutral in WWII, the country was invaded by Germany in May 1940 and the country was occupied for five years. This war left its mark on Amsterdam. In 1940, ten percent of its population had been Jewish and at the end of the war only 5,000 of the 80,000 Jews remained.
In the 1950s the people were mainly concerned with restoration of the country. The 1960s were one of the most colourful decades in Amsterdam's history. Students and women campaigned for greater rights and foreign hippies flocked to Amsterdam, attracted by the city's tolerant attitude to soft drugs. Since there were so many people using drugs, the local government tolerated possession for personal use and this policy has gradually adopted throughout the whole country. The IJ tunnel opened in the 1970s the IJ tunnel opened and in the 1980s the first underground metro line. The 1990's were relatively quiet except that a Boeing crashed into a flat building in the Bijlmer quarter.
21st century Amsterdam remains a lively place. Millions of visitors visit the Dutch capital every year and Amsterdam is still known for its nightlife and the many concerts, festivals and events that are held.
